Service Entrances and Panels

A residential service entrance starts at the service point, since this is the point where the power company services power too.  From here your electrical service is broken down into 3 classifications, overhead service, overhead to underground service or an underground service. First the service entrance conductors run from the power company's service drop to the meter socket. After the meter socket the service entrance continues to a disconnect or directly into the electrical distribution panel. It is important to realize most older homes if not previously upgraded came with a 60 Amp or 100 Amp fuse or breaker panel. These days, with all the new electronics and power consuming appliances these older systems need to be upgraded to keep up with the greater power consumption.

A standard service entrance upgrade includes all new:

  • Weather head and service entrance cable
  • Meter socket
  • Electrical distribution panel
  • Circuit breakers
  • Grounding to the waterline and New ground rods

This means everything will be brand new and up to currant electrical codes and regulations, from the service point all the way to the grounding of the electrical system.
